Temporary Tides

This site-specific installation puts the viewer at a below-water vantage point, allowing you to walk between harbor dock pylons flooded by rising seas. The work changes depending on the light, reminiscent of the variable depth of water above.

The installation is a meditation on changing landscapes. One of the forces that push my art practice is a fear of forgetting that looms invisibly and constantly overhead. My work deals with the imprint that certain places create on a person’s memory, and by ruminating on changing landscapes that surround me I work to combat this fear of forgetting. I recently moved back to Maine and have been walking by the Portland harbor along the water each day. Even though, or maybe because, I grew up in a landlocked country, the movement of the coastal landscape has had a profound impact on my daily life and art practice.
